About Douglas Carlos McDowell

I am a husband and father of two young children. If elected, I will work to create quality, equitable, and safe educational spaces and experiences for PVSD Students and Staff.

I am ASKING FOR YOUR VOTE to bring forward FRESH IDEAS and accomplish these GOALS:

  • Create inclusive and equitable learning environments for our increasingly diverse student population.
  • Increase accessibility to district meetings and services.
  • Prioritize mental health resources to ensure safe learning environments for teachers/students.
  • Ensure that teachers and staff are supported and valued.

BACKGROUND:

We need board members that recognize, value, and respect the different lived experiences of our diverse community. My own experience as a bi-racial student and father can bring a much needed and fresh perspective to the board.

My professional background includes being an Educator, Business Owner, and Engineer. I have two degrees: Mechanical Engineering & Audio Engineering. I am detail-oriented, pragmatic, and a problem-solver. I have extensive project management experience and have overseen large teams and budgets. I examine data closely, follow best practices, and seek out community feedback.

I am honored to be endorsed by local Education and Community Leaders.

What makes Doug Qualified?

“First and foremost, as an engaged parent, I am very involved in my children’s education and care deeply about not only their experience in school, but also the experiences and concerns of their friends and family members.

Professionally, I am I am a Mechanical Engineer at Amgen, and that role has qualified me for a position at the school board in that I regularly oversee large projects, teamwork and collaboration across multiple departments, and my work is dependent on being very detail oriented, data-driven, and in compliance with regulations. I know what it takes to accomplish big goals with finite resources and time.

My two roles, as a father and engineer, have given me the skills to be compassionate and deliberate as a decision maker, and I hope to utilize them on the School Board to create a space where parents, teachers, staff, and community members feel confident that Camarillo has a top-notch education system.”

What is Doug’s Top Priority?

Board transparency & accessibility. Currently, board meeting recordings are not readily available online. Meeting minutes are dry and lack detail. PVSD parents should know exactly what is being communicated, and by whom.

For instance, most community members are not aware of the declining student enrollment and the consequences of that happening. We need to ensure that the PVSD board is not only addressing issues like this, but is also doing everything possible to make it easy for parents and community members to be engaged in their local school system. We all know that going to board meetings in person, especially when you have small children, can be an enormous ask. It says a lot to me that the current board, who has had the capability to make it easier on parents to be involved, has chosen not to do so.

If elected, this will be a top priority. I believe we can accomplish the vision of providing an excellent educational experience, and do it efficiently, with great consideration of ALL the needs of students in our care.
